A Chancel Repair Search is designed to highlight whether a particular property you are proposing to purchase may be affected by a potential “Chancel Repair” obligation to the local Parish Church.  Chancel repairs stem from medieval times, where the Church was granted powers to charge rectorial property for the upkeep of the chancel of the parish church. Potential any property located within the boundaries of a Parish where such a liability exists could be “caught”. 

What is required by us:

1. Provision of Plan
2. Parish Name (failure to provide the parish details may lead to a longer turnaround).
3. Full Address of Property to be Searched

What is returned to yourself on completion:

1. Cover Letter confirming whether or not property is liable.  (With details of plot numbers)
2. A copy of appropriate Index Records for the parish.
3. A copy of appropriate Record of Ascertainments.

The Index Records provide information as to whether the Parish has any liability within. 

The Records of Ascertainments provide details of the individual plots; those listed are liable for chancel repairs in the area.
